What Makes a Great Soap?

Many people appreciate a high quality bar of natural soap. Good soap cleanses and nourishes your skin, smells nice, and makes you feel good. But what is it really that makes a great bar of soap? How do the soap ingredients affect your skin, health, and well being? What factors should you consider when you shop for high quality soap?

Sure, it's clear that the ingredients make a difference. But what properties will a soap bar exhibit when high quality ingredients are used to craft it? The ingredients list is useful, but may not tell you everything. For example, the grade and brand of olive oil used may not be disclosed.

In addition, soapmakers may use a variety of vegetable oils that are less expensive than olive oil at the expense of the amount of olive oil used. Since the amount of olive oil is not specified, it's hard to tell how much of it is actually in the soap.

The list of oils and fats that soapmakers may use is long. Some are much more expensive than others, depending on the process used to produce them. Different types and grades of fats and oils will give different characteristics to the final product - the soap.

Different soapmakers may also use essential oils that come from different parts of the world, are of significantly varying quality, and were produced using different distillation and extraction processes. Some extraction processes used to produce essential oils may involve chemicals that may still exist as a residue in the final essential oil.

So how do you know that premium ingredients were used to create the soap that you buy?
Look for the following properties in soap you buy and use:
1. Moisture: The most immediate indication of a poor quality soap bar is dry skin. It's almost impossible to produce a good moisturizing bar with poor ingredients. If you find soap that keeps your skin from being dry - stick to it.
2. Lather: High quality soap made of fine oils will easily build a lush, rich lather. Good lather means not only quality ingredients, but also that the correct process was followed to make the soap.
3. Firm and durable texture: Good soap is firm, and does not soften easily when exposed to reasonable humidity and water conditions. This property is a great indication of the quality of the ingredients.
4. Appearance and aesthetics: Nice looking soap is not necessarily quality soap, yet it doesn't hurt to be good looking. Aesthetic appearance is not easy to obtain when crafting soap by hand, and aesthetic soap demonstrates the thought, creativity, and effort put in by the soapmaker.
5. The way you feel when you're out of the bath: Ultimately, this is how "you just know" this is great soap. Premium soap, in particular aromatherapy soap that contains high grade essential oils, will be invigorating, and will have a calming, relaxing effect.
