The virtues of grapeseed oil
Many natural oils may be used in soapmaking to
enrich handmade soap. Every type of oil has different
properties and different benefits to offer the soap.
Grapeseed oil (Vitis Vinifera) is particularly
interesting. We found that it should be used in small
quantities to avoid having oily feeling soap. Yet, a
small addition of Grapeseed oil gives the soap
remarkable properties.
Grapeseed oil is obtained by pressing the grape seeds
and capturing the small amount of oil they contain. It
is rich in Linoleic acid ω6 (about 60% - 80%)
and vitamin E, and low in saturated fats (around 12%
Palmitic and Stearic acids). It is widely used in body
lotions, lip balm, hand cream, and regenerative
products. Grapeseed oil has emollient skin
conditioning properties, and is also believed to have
astringent properties that help tone and tighten the
skin.
Commonly used as massage oil, Grapeseed oil may
serve as carrier oil for aromatherapy purposes. When
used in soap, Grapeseed oil will add good moisturizing
properties and is therefore helpful for scaled and dry
skin.
